Life at The Club of the Isle puts you in the center of Galveston’s rich and unique culture. With a thriving and prolific art scene clearly present throughout the town, it is no wonder that a person would take the time to walk the streets and marvel at the skill and creativity of this area’s residents. For an afternoon you won’t forget, we suggest taking in these amazing wall murals:
The Kindness Project Mural
Take a stroll down 22nd Street until you hit the McCrory Building on the corner of Postoffice Street. Here you will find a mural brought to the community by an organization called the Galveston Kindness Project. This group is dedicated to spreading kindness as an action, instead of just as a nice word or thought. The mural itself is inspired by Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree” and catches the eye of everyone who passes by. Kindness Project’s founder, Erin Toberman started this movement with her simple kindness toward her son, Nathan, who is confined to a back brace for 18 hours a day due to scoliosis. Her effort has far overtaken her family and is now spreading into the whole of Galveston as more and more people join the effort to bring kindness to all. The mural is truly a beautiful celebration of this.
Located on Seawall Boulevard, this 2.4-mile long art specimen is the world’s longest mural. The depiction of Galveston points of interest, marine life, and birds was conceived by Peter Davis and accomplished by 14,000 volunteers, 8,500 school children, and local artists.
Performances of Years Past
On the back of The Grand 1894 Opera House is a mural created in 1983 by Sonny DeLipsey. This grand picture portrays shows of the past that have graced the stage at the theater. You can find this historic mural on 20th and Market Street.
