Stop By Galveston’s FeatherFest

Every spring, thousands of people flock to Galveston to see more than two hundred species of colorful birds that take part in the arduous northward migration across the Gulf from Central and South America.  If you enjoy nature photography or bird watching, you don’t want to miss the city’s annual FeatherFest. This year, the event takes place April 6th – 9th and will feature birding and nature photography workshops, as well as social events including:

Galveston Complete Birding Sampler (April 6, 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)

Wake up early and explore the island with local leaders who will take you to some of the best birding spots in the area. Feathery creatures may include sandpipers, raptors, and prairie birds.

Shorebird Photography Workshop with Tim Timmis (April 6, 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)

According to the festival’s website, shorebird photography provides opportunities for action-packed shots including birds in flight, feeding, and battling over territory. During this workshop, Tim will suggest equipment choices, review camera settings, and discuss composition in bird photography.

Birds in Flight From a Boat (April 7, 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.)

This unique experience takes passengers around Galveston Bay on a boat in order to capture incredible photographs of birds as they’re in flight. Scott Buckel will provide tips and tricks so everyone can take the best pictures possible.

Bolivar Birding with Dick Peake (April 8, 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)

Join Dick Peake on an adventure through the Bolivar sand flats area that is known as one of the best migratory locations in North America for shorebirds, herons, egrets, and other water birds.

Raptors Revealed (April 9, 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.)

During FeatherFest, the Galveston Community Center will host free raptor shows that are sure to impress the crowd. As these magnificent birds demonstrate their free-flight ability, the presenter will explain the birds’ natural history and their unique abilities. The program will feature Lanner falcons, Eurasian eagles, and great horned owls just to name a few.
