Galveston Bay is not only a source of water and a point of pride, it is the largest bay in Texas! It is also one of the greatest estuaries in the U.S.
It is supported by the Galveston Bay Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving Galveston Bay and the animals both around and in it. The Galveston Bay Foundation sponsors many great activities to get out and about in the area and meet like-minded people in Galveston.
The Galveston Bay Foundation is affiliated with the Young Professionals Group (also known as The Cast) that hosts events such as Sailing Day on the Bay, an afternoon of sailing from the Texas Corinthian Yacht Club. Sailing Day on the Bay is held on Sunday, April 10th.
The Young Professionals Group does not only have blue-water fun on the Bay, they also hold regularly scheduled service days. Recently, 85 volunteers helped remove more than 4,000 crab traps from Trinity Bay.
The Galveston Bay Foundation also has its own celebration, Bay Day, on May 14. Bay Day is a chance to see live animal exhibits (both demonstrations of bay creatures and touch tanks), hear great music, and learn more about the place the Galveston Bay holds in the local environmental scene.
It will feature exhibits from other organizations concerned with the Galveston Bay and other bays in Texas, including Sea Center Texas, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Houston Zoo, and the Baytown Nature Center. More than 5,000 people are expected to attend.
