For the last seven years, thousands of jazz aficionados have gathered at the Rat Cat Jazz Festival.
The tradition continues this year over Memorial Day weekend on the scenic grounds of Texas City’s Mall of the Mainland.
This nine-acre site will welcome some of the biggest names in jazz including:
Maurice Brown – Maurice is a Grammy Award winning artist who is known as a trumpeter and composer mastermind. At a young age, he won the national Miles Davis Trumpet Competition and has since released several albums in which he recorded with notable singers such as Aretha Franklin, Macy Gray, and Wyclef Jean.
Ronnie Laws – Ronnie is the younger brother of Hubert Laws, and while he has a soulful tenor sound, he has never seriously pursued playing jazz. Since 1975, he has released several successful albums and has played with many well-known groups such as The Jazz Crusaders and Earth, Wind, and Fire.
Theresa Grayson – Raised in Houston, Theresa Grayson started playing the piano and saxophone in the fourth grade. She later attended college where she earned two master’s degrees with a focus on music education. Theresa has previously entertained at the festival and draws a large crowd.
Joey Sommerville – Better known as Papa J, Joey Sommerville is a contemporary jazz trumpet player who has taken the world by storm. According to his website, he is ready to make audiences dance, laugh, and cry from his soulful performances.
