Volunteering is a fantastic way to give back to the Galveston community, whether you can donate a lot of time or only a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. If you’re looking to get involved, here are a few of the best volunteer opportunities in Galveston:
UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch) is known for its innovative and compassionate patient care. It became the country’s first public medical school and hospital in 1891, and for more than a century, the university has maintained a forward-thinking spirit. UTMB serves as a major healthcare provider for all Texans, and it also strives to improve medical care around the world.
Volunteers are an important part of the UTMB team. They provide an additional level of compassionate care and can participate in a wide variety of opportunities. Duties include offering books to patients, delivering complimentary coffee to the waiting areas, and answering telephones in the emergency department.
Galveston Historical Foundation
Incorporated in 1954, the Galveston Historical Foundation is one of the country’s largest local preservation organizations. It tells the stories of individual lives on Galveston Island from the 19th century through the present day. The foundation operates several sites including Bishop’s Place and Tall Ships Elissa and welcomes thousands of visitors every year.
Volunteers work to help the foundation preserve the city’s architectural, cultural, and maritime heritage. Opportunities include taking tickets and giving docent-led tours, as well as helping with special events.
Galveston Island Humane Society
At the Galveston Island Humane Society, the mission is to protect and shelter unwanted and homeless animals. The society finds permanent homes for the cats and dogs in its care, and also provides community education focused on animal treatment.
The volunteers provide the animals with plenty of love and they also greet visitors, walk dogs, socialize cats, and so much more.Back to all posts
