Looking for something educational and fun to do? The Galveston Railroad Museum is only a short drive from Club of the Isle. This local attraction offers a remarkable assortment of exhibits and activities.
The Galveston Railroad Museum Exhibits
Visitors can see over 40 train cars and locomotives. They include both cargo and passenger cars. This collection ranks among the nation’s five biggest railroad equipment displays.
An outdoor area called “The Garden of Steam” features steam and diesel engines as well as a steam-powered tractor from 1911. It also has a gazebo for events.
Although locomotives receive the most attention, you’ll find a number of smaller artifacts. The Galveston Railroad Museum showcases model trains, calendars, and historic photos. Some of the smaller exhibits only appear temporarily.
The museum opens from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Most adults and teenagers pay $10 to gain access, but children, seniors, and military personnel qualify for substantial discounts.
You can also gain admission by making a $35+ donation and becoming a member. Museum membership includes a discount at the retro-themed gift shop. It sells toys, models, t-shirts, mugs, books, postcards and more.
During most of the year, you can ride the Harborside Express train on Saturday. Each trip lasts 15 minutes and costs $5. You’ll travel one mile along Harborside Drive.
It’s not possible to see the regular exhibits in late October, November, or December. Instead, the museum offers Polar Express train rides and performances during this period. You’ll need to purchase tickets ahead of time.
Various other special events take place from time to time. For instance, the museum began holding a yearly model train show in 2004. It usually occurs during late April, and several model train clubs participate.
